Hearth & Hollow Dispatch - A very different kind of compost

Hearth & Hollow

March 27, 2026

Hey Reader,

Spring is fully in action over here at Casa de Hearth & Hollow, and I've been running all week to get enough seeds planted, pot up tomatoes, and keep up with the lovely notes I've gotten from a very special interview I got to do on Monday.

If you're new here, hi! I'm thrilled you're joining our community of growers.

ICYMI: I was on OPB’s Think Out Loud, and if you want to listen to me talk about growing food, why everyone can do it, and what I’m doing in my backyard, it’s here: Think Out Loud

Let's dig in!

Here’s what to expect in this email:

  • What I’ll have at the Vancouver Farmer's Market this week

It's not too late to plan this season's garden! If you're feeling behind, don't sweat it. There's still plenty of time to get things in order to have a very productive garden this summer.

Reminder: all workshops are included with your CSA membership, so if you're a member and would like to come, just respond to this email and let me know.

Let's grow some food

Love compost? Wanna *be* compost?

My husband and I are finally getting around to taking care of our estate plan, and I learned the coolest thing: instead of being buried or cremated, you can opt to be composted when you kick the bucket!

Okay, maybe it's a little weird to be excited about planning for what happens to your body, but frankly, I'd like to be pushing up daisies literally and figuratively.

Washington was the first state to legalize human composting back in 2020, and it's actually a big deal because the standard cremation releases around 500 lb of CO2. You can learn more about it here.

Plant CSA

If you want edible plants and herbs for your garden, join the Plant CSA!

It's a great option if you want backups in case your seeds fail, don't have space to start your own seeds, or just want to hit the easy button and get some help and support for the season.

Curious about what kind of plants will you get? Take a peek at my seed collection here. (Don't worry, I'm happy to help you choose the best options for your space.)
