Hey Reader,
I was featured in Business Insider recently, where I was interviewed about the ways I'm using AI.
But honestly, after sitting with it a little while, I'm a little bit disappointed.
Don't get me wrong - getting a feature is GREAT. They sent a photographer to my house and everything, which was not at all what I was expecting. (I'm used to being quoted, but this was very different.)
But they didn't share the most important pieces of what I told them, and to be fair, I get it.
The series is titled "The AI-powered Solopreneur," and while that’s absolutely me, it’s an understatement of how I’ve been using this tech to amplify everything I do, and how small it feels to confine that to a business lens.
- Like to make this resource guide to help folks find food in Clark County - and then making it easy to make one for your own community
- Or to consolidate all of the information about a local political issue and then passing it off to my local Indivisible group for further action.
- Or turning my ridic seed catalog into an easy-to-navigate Spring Catalog for folks who want me to grow their plants.
- Or to create a wiki with a friend to help folks opt out of all of the awful companies supporting this shittastic administration in the US (Coming soon!)
I can't help it - I just love a practical use case, and activism is about as practical as it gets for me.
When so many folks have their back against the wall and feel like they can't fight the empire, I'm going to use every tool at my disposal to make it easier.
There is so much work to be done - and I know finding ways for tech to amplify people-powered movements is part of mine.
I know plenty of people have issues with using AI. I don't blame them. When I see people putting up these horrible AI-generated images and videos, trust that I'm rolling my eyes to the back of my head, too. Like... what a fucking waste.
But a lot of what folks call "AI" is just the same automation tools we've had for years with a chat function.
And trust if you're using AI to outsource your thinking, you're missing the plot. A bot can’t fix thinking that isn’t clear, but it can absolutely help you clarify your thinking fast if you know how to use it.
If you're using it to minimize bullshit admin, create databases that make more possible without having to manually input all the data yourself, or otherwise freeing up your time for the pressing creative, collective work that we so desperately need to create this new world we find ourselves in, then we might just be getting somewhere.
